[Croix was already at the Observation Deck when the fire pit appeared. ... Thanks for that. He probably would have had a slightly more comical reaction if he wasn't still a liiiittle on the angry side - as it was, he simply twitched, glared at it, and then looked around for any other changes in the room. And that scribbled message on the wall? Was definitely a change. Since then, he'd tried to make his way out, suspicious about what staying there could mean. No escape, huh? It figured.

So, he's been here. Pretty much just waiting for everyone else to show up. He's standing, arms crossed, leaning on his shoulder against the glass, and just looking out at the stars. Every once in a while, he glances back at that message on the wall.]

I think it's a safe guess that more trouble's on the way.

[And he is not looking forward to whatever is coming up next...]

[He's silent for a moment, not sure what to do or what would help her. He hates seeing her so upset... He steps toward her and puts a hand on her shoulder, gently.]

If you need to talk through it, I'll listen.

[he's always so kind. she shakes her head again, but she doesn't shake off his hand] I'll be all right. It's just...as long as I'm here, I'll never find out what happened to Howl.

[but she's not going to cry about it; not now. she does let out a sniff, though. clearly that's just from the cold]

[He nods.]

That's just another reason for us to get back to our homes. And we will. I don't care who or what is threatening otherwise -- there's a way, and we're going to find it.

[And he's not just saying that to make her feel better. He really, truly believes it.]

Yes. Yes, I know. [she nods, meeting his eyes. she may be sad and worried, but she's also determined] We'll do whatever it takes.

But Mr Croix... I'm not sure what it means, but not everything I said was true either. I didn't kill the Witch of the Waste; Howl did.

I don't know either. [He shakes his head.] It's strange that they'd want us to confess things and lie. Do they want us to come clean, or are they just trying to make us paranoid?

Making us paranoid, perhaps. Really, I don't see any other point to those particular lies. Why would it matter why you left your hometown or who exactly killed the Witch?

[other than to get them talking about it, of course, but Sophie isn't quite realising how important that might be]

It doesn't matter. At least, it shouldn't. [He frowns, arms crossed, trying to think...] What if it wants us to figure out what the lies are? Or what the truths are?

Wouldn't that be more effective with lies we wouldn't want to admit? But I suppose any of it could sound like a truth or a lie if we didn't explain it. [thoughtful] Could that be why? To force us to explain?

It could be, yes, but... What's to gain from that?

[she shakes her head] I've no idea. Nothing happened when you explained.
