[when Sophie turns on her CAT, her expression is neutral--very carefully so. on the surface, she seems normal, but someone looking closely might notice that her eyes are a bit red and puffy. otherwise, she has a blue shawl wrapped around her shoulders and is seated on the sofa in her townhome. as soon as she begins to speak, that neutral expression goes out the window, and her bitterness is clear]

Since they've so graciously given us some time to ourselves, I think we should use it wisely. It's been cold all day, and--knowing this town--that means it'll be worse tomorrow. I suggest everyone visit the stores and prepare for that. Also, I am going to knit hats and gloves with protective charms in them for anyone who is interested. If you'd like some, please stop by my townhome so I can take measurements.

[she pauses] And...to everyone who... [but her voice catches in her throat, and she lets it trail off. she swallows hard before adding, quickly, her voice thick:] Oh, nevermind! [she quickly shuts off her CAT]

[filtered to Kanaya]

[she takes a moment to collect herself before sending out another message, keeping her tone as businesslike as she can do] I know we met under rather...false pretenses. But if you do know how to knit, and you wouldn't mind, I could use your help. Would you like to?

Ah… that sounds good. Really, this is just inconvenient. [he's added a jumper to his usual ensemble, and looks like he's considering adding another layer]

Do you mind if I come over for a little while?

[darkly] Inconvenient is a word for it.

Ah...no, not at all. I can take your measurements. [she brushes a hand across one eye, trying to look casual about the gesture]

[desertdaggers]

I don't understand why anyone would do this at all. [he sighs, and shakes his head, one arm wrapped around himself.]

I'll see you soon, then. [and a little while later, he is knocking at the door, very politely]

[fortune_sought]

Just a moment! [Sophie hurries over to answer it, holding it open and gesturing for Hawk to come in] Hello, Mr Hawk. Please, have a seat. [she gestures to the sofa, which has a tray of teacakes set out on the table in front of it]

[desertdaggers]

Ah… thank you. [He takes a seat, closer to the edge of the sofa than he usually would, and hesitates before reaching out for one of the cakes.]

…ah… Sophie?

[Thanks to the lack of sunlight, Kon's feeling the effects of the cold too - and while he doesn't look cold, he wouldn't turn down protective charms.] Some gloves'd be awesome. When'd be a good time for me to head over?

[Sophie is still trying to look composed] Any time you'd like.

[He pauses, before adding:] Those last two weeks? Never happened.

[fortune_sought]

[her expression darkens, and her voice is a bit thick] No...they didn't.

[she doesn't look at him] I... [but she's at an uncharacteristic loss for words] I'd rather not talk about it. Or--or about the last several weeks at all!

I don't think anyone does, but ignoring them does not make them disappear.

[fortune_sought]

[quietly] No. [but her voice raises in volume as she angrily adds:] But this town seems to think it can make everything else about our lives disappear if it feels like it!

[This is unexpected. Kanaya takes a moment of her own to think before responding, her manner much more careful than the last time they spoke.]

Alright. Knitting isn't my forte, but I can still help. Is now a good time?

Ah, yes. [she smiles a little weakly] Thank you. We can start with hats and gloves for ourselves, and I'll add more as I get measurements from other residents.

[Actually, this might be fun. She's never made clothes geared toward warmth before.]

Sounds good to me. Is your address unchanged?

[she reddens] Oh...no, I actually live in West B2. [which is not the Doctor's townhome where she thought she lived for a few weeks] Feel free to come by whenever you have the chance.

Xion! I... [she shakes her head] No. No, I suppose I'm not. [she opens her mouth to say something else, but she can't bring herself to. she shakes her head again and says instead, her voice thick:] Come by when you can. I'd like to knit a hat and gloves for you.

Okay. I'm not doing anything, so I can come by now, if that's okay.

[fortune_sought]

Yes, of course. I'll see you soon. [she smiles weakly before she turns off the CAT]

[Jamie's found a windbreaker to wear over his shirt and kilt, but he's blowing on his hands to warm them, even so. It's for the obvious reason - but it's a good way to hopefully distract her from noticing the slightly worried expression he has on his face.]

[she shakes her head, her expression downcast] Of course not, Jamie. You look like you could use a pair of gloves.

[Shortly after that, there's a brief knock outside Sophie's door. A look outside reveals Jamie standing there, hands tucked under his armpits. He's not quite up to the point where he's stomping around to keep warm, but it looks like he's considering it.]

Oh goodness, come in! [Sophie beckons him inside, ready to close the door as soon as he's through it] Would you like a blanket? I've just put the kettle on. [she gestures to her sofa, which has a tray of teacakes on the table in front of it]
