[The festival is a new experience for Jamie, and it would have likely brought him out even if he hadn't received the note. That just makes him more determined to go. He's even managed to get the idea that he should maybe dress up a wee bit, and is wearing a nice coat, ruffled shirt and a decorative baldric along with his usual great kilt. The mask he's gotten doesn't quite match, but he's resigned to having to have it on, at least for now - and the music notes on it aren't so bad.

It's a grand get together, to be sure, but his gaze keeps going over to the archways. And despite spending a good deal of time where there's food, he finds himself wandering closer and closer to that part of the square. Maybe a peek behind one of those curtains is in order...]

(( OOC: Jamie and Natsuo are going to explore curtain #1 thanks to the wonderful combination that is curiosity and boredom, but things are also open if people want to come chat or see about tagging along. Feel free to tease him about his kilt and get faces made at you in return. XD ))

[seeing someone who looks quite familiar--it's the kilt that gives him away, really--Sophie makes a beeline through the crowd for him] Jamie, is that you?

[He turns as he's called and peers at the young lady curiously, trying to place who it is behind the mask.] Aye, it is.

[The voice is familiar, at least, so he takes a guess.] Sophie?

[Sophie smiles, glad for the familiar face] Yes, I'm Sophie. How are you, Jamie? [meaningfully] Enjoying the festival?

Oh, aye, it's something, all right. [This, incidentally, is said in the tone of someone who's not quite sure the something is necessarily a good thing. He glances around for a moment, as there's a question he wants to ask, but it seems a bit congested here.]

Would ye care to go for a bit of a walk with me?

[Sophie smiles wryly in a way that suggests she agrees. but she raises an eyebrow at the request, wondering what Jamie has in mind, then nods] Yes, of course. [she takes his arm, not wanting to get separated in the crowd]

[He puts his hand over her arm as they walk, the very picture of a gentleman escorting a lady throughout the celebration. It's not until they're a short distance away from the other townsfolk that he speaks again.]

Look, did ye pick that mask up in one of the stores? Or did ye happen to have it delivered to ye along with a wee note?

[Sophie raises an eyebrow] Mine came with a note. It seems someone wants to meet us.

Mine too. But who wants to meet us?

The murderer, I would imagine. I only wonder where they'll be.

That's a good question. You'll not be able to tell with all these masked people about. Unless...

[curiously] Unless? Do you have an idea?

Unless the note itself is some sort of clue.

[she frowns, fetching hers out of her pocket, and holds it out to him] Was yours the same?

[He takes the note, looks it over, then nods and offers it back.] Aye, I believe so.

[With his free hand, he starts to rummage in the pockets of the coat he's wearing.] Let me see, where did I...ah, there it is.

[Since Sophie offered him her note, he offers her his to look over.] It looks the same to me. What do ye think?

[Sophie accepts his note, glancing over it, and nods] Yes, it does look identical. But what clues do you see in the note?

[With a faint frown, the Scot looks at the note again, then up and over at the curtained archways.]

Maybe these... [He points at the symbols on the bottom of the note, then over at the curtains.] ...are supposed to mean those?

[Sophie's eyes widen] Jamie, I think you're right! These must be where the murderer wants us to go. [she eyes the arches dubiously. it's convenient that you can't see through the curtains] But which one...

That I don't know. [There's got to be something in the note that tells them, but what?]

Hey, this says 'once'. Maybe he means the first curtain?

[Sophie shakes her head] I'm not certain... It might be easiest to simply try them all.

[Well, she's got a point. If he does that eventually he'll get the right one that way.]

Aye, maybe so. It might take me a wee bit to check them out, but I'll let ye know what I'll find. We should get someone to stay with ye while I go, though. Just in case.

[turns to him, shocked] What? We should be trying two different ones, of course!

Now, look, Sophie, it could be dangerous to go back there. What happens if ye get hurt?

[oh, like she's going to listen to that] The same thing that would happen if you got hurt, I would imagine!

[Of course not. It isn't going to stop him from trying, though.] Aye, maybe so, but I'm not the one who can make things to protect the others. Besides, there could be fighting. That's no place for a lassie.

[glares at him open-mouthed. then turns and storms off toward one of the curtains]
