[it probably comes as no surprise to anyone who knows her that, when Sophie's CAT activates seemingly without her consent, it shows Sophie looking terribly annoyed] What do you mean by asking questions like this just to go in!? I have a headache, and I would like some tea, and you are going to open this door!

[she is standing outside the tearoom, her hands on her hips and definitely not a mood to deal with the hologram in front of her, currently displaying a trivia question: What is the name of the reptilian race that, by the 25th century, dominated a large portion of the galaxy matched only by their rival and sometimes enemy the Earth Empire?]

I have no idea what you're even referring to! Open the door! [grabs the knob, but the door doesn't budge. instead, an angry tone sounds to reveal to Sophie that she has answered incorrectly]

[she lets out a cry of frustration] Curses! Open!

[unfortunately, as she tries the knob again, another hologram appears, this time with the question: What is the name of the weapon that can both unlock all doors and people's hearts?]

[gapes] Whatever it is, it must be black magic indeed! Stop this nonsense and let me in!

[observers might be able to guess that she's been at this for a while. in fact, one by one, strands of her hair have been changing to orange yarn, though not enough to be easily visible yet. she's also about two inches shorter than she should be and her left foot is composed of fabric rather than skin. this is not a good day for Sophie]

Oh, I didn't think he was that bad. I thought he had a very good beside manner.

[is appalled] How can you say such a thing when he's the one who killed my brother?!

[is gaping at Brax herself] Not that bad!?

Well, perhaps, but your brother was a traitor, wasn't he? We drown traitors in shallow water where I'm from. Your brother's death was merciful.

[her eyes narrow and she suddenly slaps him] Bastard! Having your throat cut open with a broken bottle is not merciful!

[starts marching away, angry tears brimming in her eyes]

[is staring at him in utter shock] How could you say such a thing to her?

[He doesn't even rub his cheek. He just watches Audrey walk away, thoughtful. Then he glances at Sophie and half-smiles]

When I said Resarci wasn't so bad, she, angry, admitted to us that she knew he was guilty. I was hoping she'd deny that her brother was a traitor by telling us why Resarci killed him. Not my best play, and I shall have to find a way to apologize. Bernice always does tell me I'm bad with human emotions.

[gapes again]

I'll say you're bad with human emotions! If you'd said such a thing to me, I would have slapped you myself!

Well, of course you would have. I deserved it. It was unforgivably cruel.

[gapes] And yet you still said it!

Yes. Because your foot is made of fabric and your hair is slowly turning to yarn. And while I appreciate Ms Ardes's inability to speak, we need something.

I... [makes a face, annoyed that she can't very well argue with that. fiddles with her hair self-consciously] And what do you think we've gained?

Not much. As I said, it was a bad play. But we know that we're not the only ones answering personal questions to open these doors. And perhaps, if we lurked around some doorways, we might learn a few things about the residents here.

[frowns. something about that doesn't sit well with her, especially considering how she's felt about answering questions at doors herself] I suppose so...

[He looks at her seriously] Don't let me ask you to do anything you're uncomfortable doing, Sophie.

[sighs, memories of Howl's discovery that she had let Miss Angorian into the castle running through her mind. how stupid she had been, to be even as kind to her as she was] I'm simply not certain they all deserve such treatment.

[He looks at her for a moment longer, then sighs himself.] No, they don't. Most people don't. Unfortunately, in these situations, what people do or don't deserve tends to be left by the wayside.

[glances at him] Like how you treated Miss Ardes. You do think it's truly necessary.

We keep holding back and people keep suffering. Complacency gets blood on your hands too, you must realize. So yes, it's necessary to stop this. I've had more than enough of disasters.

I do... [sighs] Then I suppose we should go ahead with your suggestion.

As I said, you don't have to if you aren't comfortable with it.

You point out that the blood will be on my hands for inaction, and then you insist that I don't have to act? Really, Mr Braxiatel, I do know my own mind.

[he half-smiles] My apologies, Sophie. That was 'the royal we.' I meant only to explain why I am driven to act.

[half-smiles back. she enjoys this, really] Well, you did an awful job of it! It seems I shall have to act now, too.

Skulking by doorways? We'll make a spy of you yet.
