[the CAT activates, seemingly by itself, to show Sophie Smith tending her flower shop. at the moment, she is arranging flowers in the front window, mumbling to herself as she does so. occasionally, she glances up to peer through the window--painted with the curly-lettered message "H. JENKINS FRESH FLOWERS DAILY"--to see if any customers might be coming]

[a voice drifts through the air, saying with a thick Welsh accent:] "If you were expecting an ultraviolet violet or an infra-red geranium, you got it wrong, Mrs. Mad Scientist."

[Sophie jumps at the voice. an expression of worry crosses her face for a moment--and then it passes. she goes back to her work as though nothing has happened, mumbling cheerfully as she puts a final sprig of Baby's Breath into a pot teeming with strange, navy blue roses]

[ooc: Sophie has assumed her resident persona for the current plot.]

[and someone who's been walking by happened to take a good whiff of whatever that was. then that someone grins as she walks straight in.

it's terezi pyrope on the case of the wonderful smelling flowers.]

...More like a genius scientist with the way these flowers are growing! I can just tell by the scent, you're doing a great job.

[and she added, just to tease.]

[Sophie frowns at that comment, not quite sure what to make of Terezi's acknowledgement of the strange voice. but she puts it out of her mind after only a moment's hesitation, and she smiles warmly] Hello, Terezi. Is there anything in particular you're looking for today?

[for a moment, she is about to answer no, not really, but then a single thought occurs pertaining to a certain someone, and ponders if there is anything she could get.]

Actually, maybe so. Something a little bit cutesy?

[a giggle.]

Romantic?

[Sophie smiles, then puts a hand to her chin thoughtfully] Well, roses are always romantic. Red roses especially. I suppose daisies are cute, and I'm partial to coloured orchids, myself. What would you like to see first?

[she thinks she might go for the traditional route.]

Hmm... the red roses! Not only are they the best color, but they never really get old.

[she nods] That's very true, and I do have some here. [she steps over to a shelf, bringing down a pot full of fresh red and white roses] How many would you like? Just one, or a bouquet?

[she takes a nice whiff and grins.]

These smell amazing, Sophie!

A bouquet would do.

[Sophie nods with a slightly proud smile, moving to the counter to gather some paper to wrap them in] Would you like to choose which ones, or shall I?

[Ichijou claps his hands together once excitedly!]

Oh! Sophie!

Such beautiful work as always - it reminds me of the night sky!

Please tell me that you're planning a big display for this year's festival! I know it's not a major milestone like the one the year before last, but it simply won't feel complete without it.

[Sophie smiles at her visitor] Why thank you, Mr Ichijou. And yes, I'll be putting something together. [she doubts the Mayor would allow her to back out of it if she ever tried] Are you helping with the decorations at all this year?

Well nobody specifically asked me to help out, but I'm sure that was just a little mistake or the result of a bit of forgetfulness.

It may be better that way, anyway. While I haven't been asked to decorate the town, I have been asked to "decorate" several of the townspeople. It'll be a miracle if I don't run out of gemmed and feathered hairpins!

[she smiles, amused] I'm sure it was.

Oh? [she's surprised by that description. hairpins, eh?] Who are you helping this year?

I won't take it personally. I would have found the time for it of course, but this lifts a little bit of the weight off of my shoulders.

You'd probably get a shorter list if you had asked who I'm not helping this year! You know how popular my house parties are, yes? Well, I've used the most recent one to try to drum up excitement for this year's festival, and threw in a bit of shameless self-promotion on the side.

It turns out that putting your friends on the spot like that is a very effective way to fill out your schedule!

[Sophie gives him a look, not entirely thrilled at his methods] Well, I'm glad for your success.

What styles do you have in mind?

[He doesn't seem to notice, or he just doesn't care.]

I'll just be doing something simple for myself, but all of my clients will be in for an opulent treat! See, I've actually been doing research for this one - I've been looking at all sorts of illustrations and descriptions of queens, and I'm working based on those.

Isn't that a great idea? Everyone deserves to feel like royalty at least once.

Oh! [despite his questionable methods, she nods, liking that idea] That does sound very nice for the festival. I'm sure you'll make your clients happy. [although she wonders if any of their husbands might protest]

[Jamie is passing by the window of the flower shop when he spots Sophie arranging flowers, and something rather pleased comes into his expression. He abruptly turns towards the door and heads inside. It's just in time to catch the tail end of the voice, and the pleased look turns a little confused - but he shakes it off after a second, focusing on the navy blue roses instead.]

Hello, Sophie. Have ye gone and come up with something new, then?

Oh, hello, Jamie. [Sophie turns with a smile as he enters] Yes, they've finally bloomed! What do you think? [she steps to the side so he can see the pot clearly]

They're very blue. [Which is definitely different, and he's eying them thoughtfully.]

Ye know, I've not ever seen the like of them before. I daresay there's not anyone in Centropolis that has flowers like this.

[He glances up at her and smiles.] You've a gift for this, Sophie.

[Sophie blushes a bit at the compliment] Thank you, Jamie. It's good to be able to brighten people's homes.

Speaking of, is there anything you're looking for today?

Aye, well, I thought I might get some flowers for a...friend.

[A friend down at the malt shop who he might possibly have his eye on, that is.]

What would ye recommend?

[she just smiles, though she has an inkling what he might mean by "friend"] Did you have a particular message in mind? Or a colour?

[Oh, there was a message, but he's not entirely sure how to translate it into flower-ese.]

Ah...we're supposed to be spending some time together at the festival. And she's very pretty, so something for that?

[she nods, understanding] Then the flowers will have to suit her. What does she look like? And do you know any colours she's fond of?

[Rather than launch into a description straight off, he winds up chewing on his lower lip, debating if he should even bother. Once he does, she'll likely know who he's talking about anyway, so he might as well just say it.]

It's wee Janet, the one waitress at the Malt Shop. I'm not sure about the colours, though. Do ye think pink might work?

Janet? [she frowns, trying to think of who he means] Oh! Yes, I think pink would do nicely. Were you considering roses? [she steps over to a display, indicating a pot of roses of various colours]

[He looks at the roses, which are very pretty, but after a moment he shakes his head.]

Roses seem more...formal, if ye understand what I'm saying. I'm not so sure we're ready for those yet. I was thinking something more like ones ye might find if you're out in a field. Wildflowers, aye?

Oh! Then perhaps wild roses. Or orchids. Or aster, maybe... [she puts a hand to her chin thoughtfully] Here, let me show you. [and she goes to several displays, picking a bloom from each and bringing them over to a counter so that he can see them all at the same time] Would any of these do?

Hm. [His eyes travel back and forth over the choices, finally settling on the aster, and he points to it.]

This one, I think. Would all pink be too much with those, though?

Good choice. [she smiles, but she considers his question] Well, you could always add a few of an accent flower to the bouquet. With pink, I would recommend white. Or perhaps purple, if you'd like it a bit more colourful.

[Jamie considers this for a moment, but can't quite decide which way to go. This flower business is tricky. Eventually, though, he manages to comes up with another question.]

What about both? Won't they all work together anyway?

Hmmm... Yes, they would do. You never want your accent flowers to overpower your main flowers, but I think with a few small ones... [and she bustles about the shop a bit, gathering a bouquet of aster and a few smaller flowers to offset it. she also grabs an empty pot and arranges the results in it] There. What do you think?

[A broad smile appears on his face as he sees the final result.]

Hey, that looks bonny. I think that'll do just fine. What do I owe ye for these?

I'm glad! [she offers a fair price] Let me wrap them for you. [and she gathers the bouquet so she can put it in paper]

Oh, thank ye very much.

[He fishes the appropriate amount out of his sporran while she wraps up the flowers.]

I'm glad you're here. Otherwise I likely would've had to try and sneak some flowers out of the gardens, and I'd not imagine that working out very well.

[she wraps the bottom of the bouquet expertly in paper, offering it to him. but she snorts at that plan] Then I'm sure you'll be glad to hear that Jenkins' will be here for many years to come. Good luck at the festival.

[For the briefest of moments, Jamie grins.] Good to know, but thank ye all the same. I'll see ye later, Sophie.

[Taking the flowers, he gives her a little wave and heads out of the shop.]

[... oh, hey, seeing this gives Xion an idea. She switches on her video function.]

Aunt Sophie!

Xion! [Sophie smiles brightly at her niece] How are you today?

Good! I was wondering if I could swing by today and buy some flowers.

Certainly! Are you looking for anything in particular?
