It's the Italian answer to your conventional ice cream. Well, not yours specifically. Anyway, it has a lower butterfat and sugar content and has a denser, richer flavour. Well, it also depends on what kind you get. Some can be quite custardy, but that's thanks to the inclusion of egg yolks at a certain stage in the process.
