Second Arrow

[Around 12:02 AM, Cissie turns her CAT on and stares at it again. Dressed in sensible green and white striped pajamas, she's sitting in her kitchen with some milk and cookies. And from the looks of things? She's certainly not amused.]

Can anyone else sleep with this racket? I can't believe this ringing! It's like someone forgot to turn their alarm off.

I have a message to those that like to set alarm clocks: for everyone else's sanity, please don't. I haven't been able to sleep and it's really quite irritating.

... Though I wouldn't be surprised if frat boys were behind this. Honestly! At times like this, it makes me glad I go to an all-girl school. Nevermind that people can still be stupid anyway.

Oh, right! I have a question for all fellow insomniacs: what's your favorite remedy for sleeplessness? Mine's a warm glass of milk and cookies, but ah... it isn't exactly working tonight.

[Sophie is in a white shift, sitting in a chair in her living room with her arms crossed and looking very put-out indeed. her eyes are at least as red as her hair as she rubs one] I'd ask Calcifer to sing his saucepan song, but he's not here, and I can't put myself to sleep. Not that I'm sure what would happen if I tried it--[yawns]--on anyone else.

We need to find a way to stop that racket! [glares at the window, as though that will help]

Calcifer? Was he a friend of yours? [she doesn't mean to imply that she's asking if Cal's Sophie's boyfriend, really! When Cissie's half-asleep, she doesn't really think twice about the tone of her voice.]

You're telling me. I'd head out, but I'd rather not break curfew. [she groans, running a hand through her hair.]

[yawns again] He's our fire demon. [that's all right, Sophie is probably being more open than she otherwise would be]

Pfft! They have no right. I have half a mind to go out there and see if I can't do something about this.

... Oh. [Friendly fire demons! She learns something new everyday.]

Can't blame you. Keep an eye out for the patrols if you do go out!

I'm sure I can handle their patrols. And it would be better than simply sitting here listening to that noise!

[It being past midnight is no reason for Irving not to be fully dressed. It's not like he sleeps very often anyway, after all.]

As a rule, I find something to read. Have you tried headphones to block the noise out with some other song?

I'm sure I'm going to regret this... but you can count me in. I don't think I'll be able to function tomorrow morning if that racket goes on.

[she raises an eyebrow at his outfit, but otherwise doesn't comment on it]

I tried earplugs, but that wasn't too successful... Thanks! I'll have to try that with my Walkman. [90's child for the win, right?]

[since he doesn't really need sleep all that often, he's up and about, awake as you please, and pacing about his rooms a bit impatiently. he's still wearing his brown pinstriped suit as well]

Ohhh, I don't think we have any frat boys to thank for this. There'd need to be a school of some kind first, and I haven't noticed one. Not in any part of town we can get to, anyway.

[smiles, getting a bit excited] Good! I'm in the West B apartments. Where are you?

West A for me. [returns that grin!] It shouldn't be too hard to sneak past the guards and meet up with you.

Well. There went my good excuse. Back home, whenever you were in doubt, you could blame it on frat boys... and you wouldn't be wrong half the time.

So what're we going to blame this on? People who can't call at a decent hour?

Well, I believe we need to blame it on whoever is trying to reach us. You did get that message, correct?

But what I don't understand is why must it ring constantly throughout the day? It makes little sense.

[that gives him pause] A Walkman? Really? I've never quite managed to acquire one of those.

[Retro technology is fun!]

Then let's meet by the pool and go from there.

Got it. I'll be there as soon as I can.

How come? They're really easy to get back home. Just stop into Wal-Mart or something.

I did. It sounds suspicious, but... I suppose it won't stop until we answer it, right?

No idea. You'd think that they'd give up on calling after a while.

They've been out of production for, oh, six hundred years? And there were a few upheavals on Earth that have made technology from that era a task to get your hands on.

As will I. I've...[hesitates, not sure how much to say over the CAT. glances around her suspiciously, as though that will reveal any eavesdroppers. but after a moment, she turns back to Cissie, keeping her voice low]...received something interesting, too. I'll bring it with me. See you there. [stands and cuts off the connection. then she goes to fetch her dress and a pair of sunglasses, which she slips into a pocket once she has the dress on. she'll be there waiting for you, Cissie!]

[Cissie cuts the connection and gets dressed too. Within minutes, Cissie arrives at the pool in a t-shirt and jeans. Just to be on the safe side, she also brought her bow and arrows along. ... This means she was a little on the late side, whoops.]

Hi! Sorry I was late. Those cookies wouldn't eat themselves.

Oh whoa. I had no idea you were from the future.

... For what it's worth, I have mine if you want to take a look at it. It's not, like, ancient, so it plays CDs instead of tapes.

Thank you, I'd appreciate that. I promise not to break it.

[raises an eyebrow at the bow and arrows, wondering how Cissie expects to stay inconspicuous, but there's no point in questioning it now. and really, it's probably best to be cautious]

It's all right. But before we go, I wonder...did you happen to receive a strange package in brown paper?

[She shakes her head furiously.] Nope. Why? Did you get one?
